🎣 Big Rudy’s View: Trolling the Trestle – One Troll, One Goal, Oneofthepack! 🎣
It all started at zero-dark-thirty, the kind of morning only the true fishing faithful know — sky still sleeping, air thick with that marshy Lake P promise. I met up with the legend himself, Oneofthepack, at the launch, the Bay Flat Jr floating proud and ready like a racehorse in the gate. Coffee in hand, rods rigged, and spirits high — we were back at it. Team Jo-Jo style.
Destination? None other than the Lake Pontchartrain Trestle.Mission? Silverwonders on the line using the Lake P Troll — a technique as smooth and sneaky as a redfish in shallow grass.
As we eased into the zone, trolling speed set just right, rods out port and starboard, the hum of the Yamaha Dream Machine whispered like a lullaby to the underwater world. I settled into my rhythm — eyes locked on the rod tips, hands twitching with anticipation, heart pacing like a metronome. Oneofthepack, calm as ever, played conductor to this trolling symphony.
Rod tip dips once... twice... BAM!First hit of the morning — classic Lake P thump.Quick snap of the wrist, drag singing, and I’m in. A respectable Silverwonder, dancing through the brackish current like it’s Mardi Gras underwater. A few net scoops later, we’re officially “on the board.”
The Lake P Troll is a thing of beauty when it works:
Presentation? Tight-lining ¾ oz. round lead jig heads, matched up Matrix Shad Lemon Drop w/ 2 trailers.
Depth? Bouncing bottom, feeling every tap, shell, and subtle strike.
Boat speed? Just enough to keep the lure skimming like a ghost shrimp on the run.
Mindset? Zen, alert, and always ready to shout “FISH ON!”
Oneofthepack was next — classic takedown. He worked that fish in like a maestro. You could feel the energy shift aboard. Every pass along the trestle, another story added to the log. We zig-zagged the pilings, each one a potential jackpot. We passed ducks, bait balls, and even a few p-gars checking us out — likely jealous of our catch count.
By mid-morning, the ice chest had a satisfying rattle — a sign of solid Silverwonder presence. We shared stories between fish, laughed like brothers, and soaked in the sweet cocktail of lake breeze and salt air.
Biggest moment? That double hook-up. Both rods doubled over, both of us working fish with grins so wide they might've scared off the rest of the bite. But we didn’t care — we were in it.
As we made our final troll pass, the lake calm, the trestle stretching out like a fishing memory that never ends, I turned to Oneofthepack and said, “This… this is why we fish.”
Team Jo-Jo, still trolling, still catching, still living the dream.Until next time, Lake P — save a few Silverwonders for us.
