Team Jo-Jo:
I was looking for some clarification on LW&F fishing regulation, mainly meaning of crew, and found the following:
📘 Footnotes 2, 3 & 4 in the LDWF Red Drum Brochure
These refer to explanatory notes in the state’s “Recreational Saltwater Finfish” brochure (the LDWF e‑Regulations version). The relevant footnotes are:
• Footnote 2
Clarifies that recreational anglers may possess a two‑day bag limit of red drum while off the water, but they may not exceed the daily bag limit while fishing or on the water, unless aboard a trawler engaged in commercial fishing for more than 25 hours Louisiana Sportsman+13Louisiana Wildlife & Fisheries+13Louisiana Wildlife & Fisheries+13.
• Footnote 3
Often clarifies additional terms for charter-headboat two‑day off‑water possession, but in the context of red drum it appears linked to the same two‑day possession context described in footnote 2.
• Footnote 4
Specifically refers to regulations for captain and crew—no harvest of red drum or spotted seatrout is allowed for captain and crew on charter/headboat trips; their bag limit is zero, although they may fish to demonstrate for clients Louisiana Wildlife & Fisheries+4eRegulations+4Louisiana Wildlife & Fisheries+4.
You’ll find these footnotes at the bottom of the saltwater‑finfish table or in the explanatory section of the Red Drum brochure (typically pages following the size/possession table).
🧭 Captain & Crew: What Does That Mean?
“Captain and crew” refers to the licensed operator and staff of a charter or headboat—the persons guiding the for‑hire vessel. Under Louisiana rules:
They may fish to assist or demonstrate, but they may not retain nor contribute any catch of red drum toward the vessel’s limit.
This means only paying clients/anglers are allowed to keep red drum.
Captains & crew's possession limit for red drum (and spotted seatrout) is officially zero while on charter/headboat trips saltwaterguidesassociation.comeRegulations+1Louisiana Wildlife & Fisheries+1.
