Good eats back when

Team Jo-Jo

How many of you fisherpersons out there have ever had a Po' Boy sandwich at Martin Brothers on St. Claude Street? Our favorite was French fries on French bread with mayo & gravy only, costing just 25 cents, washed down with a Barq’s Root Beer for another 5 cents. Gravy & mayo dressed was 15 cents, and during hard times, this was our go-to sandwich.

Outside Martin Brothers, on the corner of St. Claude & Touro, stood the Manual's Hot Tamale wagon. I don’t remember how much they were a dozen, but Manual's Hot Tamales were the best in the world.

These days, Rocky & Carlos in Chalmette serves up a good fried potato sandwich—once again, gravy & mayo only! But in today’s world, it’ll set you back $10 plus. And Barq’s root beer is $2.50.
