“Back to the Water — A Delacroix Itch That Had to Be Scratched”Captain’s Log – Sunday Scouting Mission – Spot #21 Recon

It had been way too long…Too many dry days off the water, and the itch was becoming unbearable. The YouTube rabbit hole had swallowed me whole video after video of anglers hauling in limits, corks disappearing like magic, red tails waving through skinny water like battle flags. The marsh was calling, and I could feel it in my bones: it was time.

With my usual crew scattered to the winds—Big Rudy off on one of his classic road trips, probably somewhere between a bait shop and a BBQ joint, and Big Ronnie still up in Indiana dodging heat waves—I knew I had to regroup and make a move.

So I lit up the line to Sr. First Mate Big Don.

Text:"Delacroix trip tomorrow (Sunday). Thinking we hit Spot #21, see if the Redwarriors have shown up yet."

Didn’t take long—Big Don hit me back with a crisp:"Yessume!"

That was all I needed to hear. Like music to the ears of a captain itching to throttle down the Yamaha Dream Machine and slide into a quiet bayou at sunrise.

Now, with the Bay Flat Sr ready and first mate locked in, I went to work looking for a second mate. My thoughts went to Big Tyrone, one of the newer bloods from our Team Jo-Jo Fishing Curriculum Sessions. A good spirit, eager to learn, and someone I've been trying to get onboard for months now. Only issue? He can only fish on Sundays—the perfect match for this trip.

Texted him:"We’re making a scouting trip to Delacroix, Sunday morning. Spot #21’s on the agenda—looking for signs of the Redwarrior invasion. You in?"

Seconds ticked by, then the reply came through like a cold front:"Out of town this weekend, Cap. Let’s make it happen soon."

Strike three on Big Tyrone again. We’ll get him eventually—but not this round.

So now it’s me and Big Don, two-man crew, heading down to Delacroix with a mission:Check Spot #21 for signs of life. Redwarriors. Tails. Wakes. Pushes. Ambushes. Anything.

The water’s been heating up, and the calendar says it’s about time they show themselves in that zone. The moon, tide, and wind will do what they do—but there’s no substitute for boots (or hulls) on the ground.

We aren’t going just to fish—we’re going to scout, observe, and if the marsh gods allow it, catch and confirm.

As always, rods are rigged, ice chest is packed (heavy on hydration, light on expectation), GPS marked, trolling batteries juiced, and Bay Flat Sr is hungry for her next hunt.

OUR REWARDS:

·         (2) Banana fish we where in a school of them many hits, hook-ups, but where hard to land, fun action it be.

·         (6) Crabs, crabs all over Orange Bayou & Oak River swimming in with tide, somewhere holding on grass and get a ride as current moved grass in, they were perfect size for fishing sheepshead.

·         (1) Freshwater cat

·         (6) Gaff tops

·         (6) Hardheads

·         (2) Bushels of grass, grass getting bad

·         (1) pod of lilies.

·         Being on the water with one of the best fisherpersons me know, that be Big Don.

·         Lessons learned:

§  Redwarriors are showing up, but in feeding frenzy just yet.

§  Water real fresh in Oak River, not much slat at all

§  Water clarity was a 4 on a scale of 1-7.

§  I wanted to check out Team Jo-Jo zone, # 1 (Had not been in year plus to this area)  one to see what up:

·         Water clarity (it to a 4)

·         What biting (catfish)

·         If route still opening (Stilla good run)

·         Also I wanted to check out Team Jo-Jo Spot # 64, had / saved many good trips in this honey hole.

·         Best fishing trip of my life, until the next one.
